Solo artist The Weak And The Strong (1999, Rotterdam NL) experiments with various sounds. Expect anything between plain songs and soundscapes. Words in English, Dutch and sometimes even German. Driven by “the ghosts in his head” and inspired by Michael Gira, Joy Division and Velvet Underground.
During live-shows the basic, pure, raw and intense songs are performed by just a voice and a battered acoustic guitar and more recently (and depending on the occasion) the sound on stage changed due to the use of an electric guitar, effect-pedals and a drum machine.
live/performances/achievements – past
The Weak And The Strong played many shows in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and England, including radioshows and venues: Paradiso (Amsterdam) and Bibelot (Dordrecht), but also small theaters, bars, cafes, art-exhibitions, livingrooms, and basically any sort of stage you can think of.
The Weak And The Strong supported various bands: De Kift (NL), Cradle FC (NL), Miss Anthropy (UK), jd meatyard (UK), Calvin Party (UK) and Lina Paul (GE) and, besides all this, reached the finals of bandbattles ‘Grote Prijs van Zuid Holland’ and ‘Hou Je Kop Luisterpop’.
The Weak And The Strong also performed shows together with musician Selma Peelen and poet Menno Smit: the RAU!-project (2012-early 2014). They played major summer festivals Oerol and De Parade and numerous other Dutch venues were played.
live/performances/achievements – present and future
In January 2015 the video ‘Blakermat’ was released. The short art film (by visual-artist TUHBA) accompanies a Dutch poem written by Johan ‘ego echo’ Visschers and music by The Weak And The Strong. The video consists of footage shot by The Weak And The Strong and TUHBA plus historical footage of Rotterdam.
The mini album ‘I Am Not Scared’ saw daylight on 15 June 2015 (etf records). In short: 7 tracks (soundscapes/spoken word) tell the story of a man suffering with amnesia, sitting in his room at night haunted by his inner ghosts. A more extensive introduction in (Dutch) writing and video can be found here.
In October 2017 the two-track recording ‘Hide And Low’ (etf records) was released continuing the approach of ‘I Am Not Scared’ but this time based on field recordings instead of plain acoustic sounds.
Apart from a solo performance every on occassion, currently The Weak And The Strong and Selma Peelen focus on their band MANKES (www.mankesproject.nl): music plus a blend of art, poetry and all kinds of creative forms.
